Meet Jordan Forester, a freshman at Miller High and a current resident in Mr. Sullivan’s sixth period AP English Literature Class. Just when Jordan was about to sneak her hundredth glance at the clock across the room the bell rang, school was finally over…for the day anyways. The moment she had been waiting for all year long, the first track meet of the season. For Jordan track was the one place where she knew she was destined to be, where she belonged, on the heated rubber track as the first hints of summer were coming on. Jordan’s heart hadn’t stopped pounding since the night before as she dreamed about what the new day would bring and what opportunities she had ahead of her, lane four was all hers; and she was going to dominate the 300 meter hurdles. Time ticked by at turtle speed, just like in any overrated Tom Cruise action movie but now that school was finally let out, it was a mad dash to the locker rooms to change and get down to the track and field before the army sergeant of a coach, Badger started spouting out instructions to prepare the field for the track meet. Time sped up to rabbit speed, finishing up all the last minute preparations and completing her warm up jog and ballistic stretches before her race. Before she knew it Jordan was on the starting line with her feet firmly pressed against the starting blocks with her head hanging anxiously awaiting the gun to go off, when all of a sudden, bang the gun went off and the race had begun. First hurdle, second hurdle…running, running, running faster and before Jordan could count how many more hurdles she had in front of her the race was already over. Jordan came in at first place, a full 2 seconds ahead of the second runner up! Jordan felt nothing but elation and excitement, everything she hoped for and had worked for had paid off, she knew she was on her way to a successful track season. As everyone knows the first few track meets of the season are to weed out the weak and to strengthen the strong for the biggest track meet of the season, state qualifiers which were only five weeks away.
Jordan loved life, she loved being with friends and learning new things, she loved to work hard and be the best, to the point that it was probably one of her faults of being too competitive, her best was never good enough, she knew she could always do better. That attitude had been instilled into Jordan at a very young age with her older sisters’ pressure to live up to their standards and by her mother who was convinced that Jordan never gave her best and could always do better and be better. That mentality had so far aided Jordan in successes throughout elementary and middle school in all areas of her life. Jordan was a tall, gangly, brunette with long loose curls just past the middle of her back. Jordan had roughly 43 lightly colored freckles that spotted her nose and cheeks that made her stand out among her four older sisters. Jordan was the youngest of the Forester girls and the only one left at home; her closest sister in age RenĂ©e had graduated from high school the previous year and had moved across the state, so it was just Jordan and her parents. Well mostly just her mom, Dave was always gone on business trips to who knows where, which left Jordan at home with her overprotective, over involved, yoga mom Gale. Jordan hadn’t quite yet inherited her mothers’ large awkward hips that Jordan’s four older sisters had inherited just after freshman year of high school. Jordan was terrified of her body changing, she liked it the way it was and she couldn’t afford any changes in fear of jeopardizing her chances of competing at state track.
The next week Jordan was headed down to the track for another week of exhausting training for state qualifiers. Coach Badger was drilling into their heads “only four more weeks till state qualifiers”. And now it was another Monday and Monday’s were the toughest, after a long weekend break from running and of no Coach Badger, it was a rude awakening for most high school students to hear the endless shouting and yelling to “run faster”, “pick up your feet”, and “that’s not good enough”, but not for Jordan, Jordan ran everyday and never took a break, her mother made sure of that. Everyone on the track team had about had enough running for the day, especially the boy’s team captain, Chester Burk.
Chester Burk was a senior, an all star, the guy who had it all, like everything he wanted happened at the flick of his finger. Simply put he was, tall, dark, and handsome. Chester was homecoming king the past four years, likely to be named prom king, star football quarterback, with endless scholarship offers to play ball across the country, and he was the most well known and best looking man on campus. Every guy on campus wanted to be his friend and every girl wanted to be his girlfriend, and Jordan was no exception. The only problem was Jordan and Chester had never spoken; Jordan had only admired him from a distance, quite a long distance considering Jordan was a freshman and Chester a senior.
As Jordan was leisurely making her way back to the locker room after practice she noticed all of the cheerleaders off to the side huddled around Brittany, the cheerleading captain, and recent ex of Chester. They were laughing and probably conniving about something vitally important such as whom are the fattest girls on the squad or who has the best prom dress and what color and style is most acceptable. As Jordan was contemplating her fantasy life as a cheerleader her world suddenly came to a halt. Before she knew it she was on the ground looking up at Chester. Luckily for Jordan now he had to know who she was and at the very least that she existed because they had just collided on their way up to the locker room. Even though it was completely Jordan’s fault that they had collided Jordan couldn’t help but show her enthusiasm. After a clumsy exchange of excuses and “I’m sorry’s” Jordan had officially introduced herself to Chester. And to Jordan’s surprise, Chester had actually taken notice to her! “You’re the girl who runs the 300 hurdles, right?” Oh course she was, she was the only girl on the track team who had even placed at the track meet last week. Chester then further surprised her with an invitation to lunch the next day, to sit at his table with the other notable track members. Jordan’s day couldn’t get any better, she had won her race and now thanks to her mindless daydreaming she had a lunch date with Chester Burk, even her mother’s daily dose of criticism couldn’t get Jordan down.
Lunch the next day went surprisingly well; overnight everyone at the table seemed to know everything about Jordan, that she was a freshman and the only girl with a shot to making it to state for the girls track team, even to the point that she had an older sister that had graduated the year before and had competed at state in the high jump. It was like Jordan’s race had made her somebody and the invitation by Chester had sealed the deal, she was a part of the coolest clique in school, just like that. The next few days at school seemed like a dream, lunch at the same table with Chester, and a fire drill that led to Jordan and Chester talking for almost an hour. Chester started texting Jordan and vice versa. Jordan felt like she was floating on air, she couldn’t be happier, not only did Chester acknowledge her existence but they were actually friends and headed to becoming more than just friends. Even Jordan’s mom hadn’t been too nagging lately, maybe she saw Chester as a good influence of getting Jordan to work harder at track practice. Track practice became more than just practice but a chance for Jordan to show off for Chester. Jordan continued to excel at every meet, surely on her path to state qualifiers, nothing was holding her back. In fact her new relationship with Chester only fueled her desire and drives to work harder and to run that much faster, and Coach Badger sure didn’t seem to mind either, as long as her two star athletes were competing well she had no qualms with the constant flirting that was going on between her and Chester. Lunch dates soon led to dinner dates and Friday night movie premiers. Jordan and Chester really seemed to hit it off. Jordan couldn’t believe it, she was just the average freshman girl who was now dating the most popular senior boy at school. Time was ticking though with only two more weeks till the state qualifiers. Pressure was beginning to mount; more time and concentration was spent at the track building strength and endurance. Jordan and Chester worked together staying busy, Jordan even started working out with the boys track team to further push herself and make practices more of a challenge, and this was just one of the many “genius” ideas of Gale Forester. Chester didn’t seem to mind Jordan’s intensity and seriousness about running; in fact it was one of the first times in his life someone was serious about anything with him. Sure state football play-offs were serious but that was a team sport and all the guys just goofed around, it was his senior year and most of the seniors had already secured scholarships for the next year at college so they were taking it easy. So Jordan’s attitude of all business was refreshing and kept Chester tethered down and focused at what was at hand, state qualifiers, only a week away.
Running every day, stretching, icing sores, aches, and pains had to be mended, the time for training had passed and with a less than a week till the big race it was suppose to be a week of easy training to let the body recoup and prepare for what was coming up, not Jordan though. Jordan increased her training hours and weights, maxing out everyday all in the name of preparation. Chester joined Jordan each day in her fanatical training methods; her methods had never failed her thus far so why back down now?
Jordan woke up the morning of state qualifiers rearing to go, she couldn’t settle down so instead of eating breakfast she went for a nice jog around the neighborhood, she got home and got ready for school. Jordan walked to school every day, she only lived eight blocks away but not even half way there, she started feeling panicky and suddenly began convulsing and before she could call for help she collapsed onto the hard sidewalk. At that same moment Chester was already at school receiving the last few “good lucks” from his friends about to hop onto the bus to drive across town to where the state qualifying meet was being held. All the athletes were loaded on the bus when Coach Badger got the phone call from Gale, Jordan’s mother informing her that Jordan would not be competing, that she was to going to be hospitalized for the next full two weeks for a combination of extreme physical exhaustion and an eating disorder.
Jordan had worked and worked herself into the ground and pushed herself beyond her capabilities. Jordan’s mother instead of supporting her and helping her recover never forgave Jordan for letting the opportunity to compete at the state qualifiers as a freshman go by. Chester competed that day at the state qualifiers and went onto qualify for state where he later took third place. After another few weeks after Jordan’s absence Chester got back together with his cheerleading girlfriend Brittany and ended up accepting the football scholarship across the country to Syracuse University that next fall. There was no happy ending for Jordan, she never ran track again and continued to battle her eating disorder the rest of her life.
